A Re-fit to Fit

I’m extremely fortunate that, within the next few days, my studio furnishings are all about to be custom built to suit my wants and needs! This is great news because not only will it all ‘fit’ me (I’m not the tallest person in the world!) and make the best use of the space but more importantly, it will increase the amount of working surfaces. What this means is that I will be able to work even more efficiently for my customers, providing increased value for money per hour and able to complete work with an improved turnaround period.

So, after the dust has settled, quite literally, (and been fastidiously swept away, of course) this week, I will look forward to meeting clients in my ‘new’ studio!

Tynemouth Second hand and Antiquarian Book Fair – 9th October 2011

The last Tynemouth book fair of the year took place yesterday. It was a busy day and once again I had many people asking multiple questions about their objects. Don’t forget to look at or download my leaflet, ‘Protecting your paper objects in the home’ which can be found in the left hand main menu and hopefully will answer many of your questions.

It was turning a little chilly as Polly Bird (bookbinder) and I packed up our stall for the final time for 2011.  We’ll miss the book fair over winter, but the chill reminded me that there is only so much coffee you can drink in a day to keep warm!

Find a photo below of our stall. This time I brought with a few extra items that people have often asked me about; Japanese papers, brushes and wheat starch paste, (adhesive). I hope you enjoyed seeing and touching some of the materials conservators use.

The next book fair is scheduled for Sunday April 22nd 2012. As always, feel free to email me any questions or photos before then or drop by my studio. Thank you!

A Note on the Metro Line for this Sunday

I incorrectly stated in my last post that the metro line between North Shields and Tynemouth was still undergoing re-construction. Please ignore this! The metro line is now running smoothly again between North Shields and Tynemouth station in both directions. The North Shields station is in some disarray with platform 1 closed for a huge facelift, but this does not affect the link and and trains are as normal.

Thank you!

Tynemouth Antiquarian and Second Hand Book Fair–9th October

Just a reminder that the next Tynemouth Antiquarian and Second Hand Book Fair will take place on Sunday 09th October, 10-4pm within Tynemouth metro station, as usual. It’s the last one for 2011 so don’t miss it! The next one is April 2012, (I’m unsure of the exact date yet).

I’m afraid the lengthy modifications to the tube line are due to finish on…Monday 10th October. Very unfortunate that it’s the day after, but it doesn’t look too arduous to still to and fro from Tynemouth on the metro until then. I’ve attached a link to a pdf document by Nexus (the operator) which gives metro travel advice and will hopefully be of help if this affects you:

http://www.nexus.org.uk/sites/nexus.org.uk/files/documents/planned_works/NSH%20PLAT%201%20CLOSED%20A0%2019%20Sept%20-%209%20Oct.pdf

I’m looking forward to getting out to meet people with many diverse paper objects again. I find many people are keen to talk about their interest and experiences in book and/or paper conservation and it’s great to find so many enthusiasts. Be careful what materials you use though if you do attempt repairs yourself. It is always best to take things to a professional but failing that, feel free to come and ask me for free advice about what materials you should and shouldn’t use. Many home remedies or quick fix repairs can cause longer term, more serious damage. I do produce my own leaflet which outlines some brief pointers on storage and handling. I’ll have a stack with me on the 09th or you can email me at any time and I will send one off to you.

Thank you!

An Alpine (Swallow) tail

I’ve been back for a few days now from our honeymoon in Europe and I thought I’d share this photo with you. As a lover of moths and butterflies, I was overjoyed that a huge yellow swallowtail butterfly should land on my hand on the summit of a mountain in the sunny Austrian Alps, (also pictured)! Unfortunately it wasn’t long enough on my hand for me to take a photo (you’ll just have to trust me)! but the swallowtail, sadly missing it’s swallowy-tail bits, hung around us for long enough for me to get a few pictures.

So, what’s all this got to do with paper conservation you might be thinking? Paper conservators frequently use Japanese papers to repair and stabilise objects. Rather surprisingly, Natural History conservators also use these papers to mend the wings of butterflies, moths and other insects within their collections as well as bird feathers.

There is a huge range of Japanese papers available and all have unique qualities such as tone, weight and wet and dry strength that lend themselves to some conservation treatments better than others. To ensure the papers are of conservation grade quality, only those which contain 100% mitsumata, kozo or gampi fibers (all from Japanese plants) are used. Some examples of the names of these papers are: Gampi Torinoko, Kinwashi Natural, Hoshokawa Ohban, Kawasaki, Kizukishi, , Kozo-S, Minota and Misugami Medium but there are many more besides. It takes great patience, tradition and excellent craftsmanship for many of these papers to be made, often by hand, in Japan.

It is up to the conservator to decide which paper may most suit an objects’ needs and how best they should be cut and applied to give an almost invisible or completely invisible repair. With the versatility, good ageing properties and beautiful textures inherent to these papers, they are a pleasure to work with.

Tynemouth Second Hand and Antiquarian Book Fair – Sunday 14th August 2011

Once again, I had a great time in Tynemouth at the book fair. Despite it being generally a smaller market than last time, (I think many were away on summer holidays),  it was still a busy day meeting lots of new people!

The next book fair is Sunday 9th October 2011. That’s the last one for this year until next April 2012 (sounds ages away, doesn’t it), so do come along and ask any questions about your objects. I’m going to bring along a few materials next time as many of you expressed an interest in seeing what sort of tools, papers and adhesives we use in paper conservation. It may surprise you that many of them look fairly basic but what is key is understanding how they work, why they work and when is best to use them. Often those decision-making processes are the most important thing to our profession.

Below is a photo of my stall, this time without Polly Bird the bookbinder (see ‘Useful Links’ page) who was a bit snowed under with work to come along this time.

Bye for now, look forward to seeing you in October!

Tynemouth Second hand and Antiquarian Book Fair – Sunday 14th August

I can confirm I will be at the forthcoming Second hand and Antiquarian Book Fair in Tynemouth on Sunday 14th August. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your objects please come along and ask me and bring photos of your objects if you can. Aside from being happy to give free quotes (rarely on the spot though, I like to consider treatments thoroughly), I always enjoy seeing paper items as well as hearing about your stories attached to them!

Hope to see you there, keep your fingers crossed that it’s a warm day!

The conservation of a cricket club certificate

I bought this lovely cricket club certificate recently and will eventually get around to beginning its conservation when I get a quiet period! Whenever that is, I’ll share the process with you here on this page. The certificate was written by the members of Central Lancashire Cricket League to a retiring Vice-President of the club and is very heart-felt and sweet to read. It’s been painted onto a medium weight cream wove paper with watercolours and a water-based gold paint.

Damage: As you can see, there is strong discolouration to the front (the “recto”, in conservation terms) caused by the adhesive used to paste the certificate to a very strong backing board. In fact it’s so heavy it’s quite something to lift it and I don’t yet know how easily I can separate the certificate from its backing. I’ll do some small test areas to find out the most effective way with minimal danger and intervention and then go onto reducing the discolouration.

Conservation: The acidic mount also needs addressing. Apart from physical issues, I need to bear in mind that the mount has been specifically designed and is part of the whole object as intended to be viewed. Shall I try and re-create the mount using conservation grade materials? I will have to give it some thought. It does appear that the mount has been specifically painted that colour yet the areas of white where it the pigment has been pulled away makes it appear that something else was once stuck over the front so perhaps the pink wasn’t on show after all, only the gold.

More on this in the future!
