Family History Fair; Saturday 07th September, Newcastle

This years’ Family History Fair will be in Newcastle again on Saturday 07th September, 10-4pm at the Central Premier Inn, (see the above link for directions).

If you are from the region and are interested in or are already engaged in researching your family history, this is a great opportunity for just a £3 entry fee to meet the experts all in one place. I went last year and found it useful, (although only because I discovered that my so-far fruitless search for many family records was because they no longer exist)!

I hope you have better luck than me!

Birmingham’s New Library

Wow, Birmingham’s new city library is pretty impressive; http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2013/aug/29/birmingham-library-francine-houben-pictures#/?picture=416013925&index=0

Whether you like the architecture or not, it’s great to see a new library being opened despite the economic struggles and more to the point, it must surely be in response to demand.

Personally, I think I really like it although I’d like to judge it in real life one day. To me, the interior nods towards both the British Library, London and the Black Diamond Royal Library, Copenhagen, while the outside reminds of me of beautiful Islamic mosaics.

If you get to visit it, please email and let me know your thoughts, I’d love to hear or take a look at the link below from someone who has given some detailed and interesting observations on the library after a sneak preview visit, (yes, I’m  jealous)!

Alnwick Provinical Booksellers Fair Association (PBFA)

Please note that in a turnaround from a previous blog post, I will now not be attending this years’ Alnwick Provincial Booksellers Fair Association, (PBFA) Book Fair on Saturday 24th August,10-4.30 pm.

This event was so enjoyable last year that I’m sad to be missing it, however, as I am no longer able to accept new work into the studio in light of my impending maternity leave, I decided that the presence of my stall there may be a little confusing and not very useful for anyone under the circumstances!

I will still be popping along for a visit to say hello to everyone and because it is such an excellent fair, definitely not one to be missed.  If you love second-hand and antiquarian books, then this is THE event of the year for the North. The fair takes place in Northumberland Hall, a lovely building with a market outside which buzzes with stalls selling everything from cakes to plants.

A list of this years’ vendors can be found by following the link given at the top of this email.

Important information regarding acceptance of items before maternity leave

Please note that due to my current volume of work, I am now unable to accept any further items before my maternity leave, which is expected to begin around the end of October.

If you have small items which are in need of light work such as repair and cleaning then I may be able to help you during September. Please don’t hesitate to contact me in September if you would like to discuss your items and find out whether treatment may be possible before the business temporarily closes for maternity leave.

Alternatively, I expect to return to work towards the end of 2014. More information will be given on this website next year with dates and a location.

I look forward to helping you in the future. Thank you.

Heritage Open Day; don’t forget to book your favourites!

The next Heritage Open Days event is scheduled for 12th-15th September 2013. These events provide hundreds of excellent, (and free) opportunities to see behind the scenes of museums, historic buildings and maybe even that lovely building you walk past every day going to work and have often wondered what it’s like inside. Well, it just might be open…

For the full list, go to: http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/directory/laa/Newcastle%20upon%20Tyne

My personal recommendations are the behind-the-scenes tours of the Discovery Museum which provide a great insight into the collection stores and items usually closed to public access. The tours must be pre-booked by contacting the Discovery Museum on 0191 232 6789. With a maximum of 20 people per tour, book early as they fill up.

I would also recommend going to the event at the Great North Museum Hancock Library who will be showing treasures of the collection, old and rare books which aren’t normally on view to the public. Contact the library to book your place.

And if you’re in town, what better place to stop off for tea and cake than Quilliam Brothers’ Tea House at 1, Eldon Place? Since I moved to Newcastle in 2008, this has always been one of my favourite buildings in the city and I used to pass it on the bus every day; a small, elegant but sadly empty and unloved building. It’s transformation was completed earlier this year into a tea house and finally, I got to step inside.

Bookings are from 01st August until early September. You’ll forget? Ok, I’ll remind you nearer the time.
