Un-framing paintings and prints

Unframing a painting or a print can be quite an exciting moment as you never know quite what you may find inside. It’s the conservators first opportunity to get to know an object properly and there can often be something worthy of note inside such as old prints or documents used for padding which provide clues as to provenance, the artist or to dating the item.

So, I was recently very pleased to be able to inform the owner of an object that while unframing his painting, a second painting had been discovered inside, unsigned but almost certainly by the same artist and painted at about the same time.

The painting on the front of the double-sided watercolour board was once exhibited in an art exhibition and this suggests that the artist decided the painting on the other side was the better of the two.  It also helps me to assess the extent of fading of the blue pigments, normally particularly susceptible to UV light, by providing a comparison which has remained protected all these years.

Botanical Illustration

I was recently blown away by these drawings which I came across while looking up botanical illustration and just had to share them with you.

The level of detail and skill is just incredible and it’s so hard to believe that these are drawings made with coloured pencils or watercolours. Click on the images so that they become larger on your screen.

I think the savoy cabbage is my favourite.

Alnwick PBFA Antiquarian Book Fair

It was a great turnout on Saturday at my first PBFA book fair, (Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association) in the beautiful Northumberland Hall in Alnwick, Northumberland. I really enjoyed meeting new clients and chatting to ex-clients again. Despite the flood warnings, (it was a dry, sunny day by the way, take note BBC, thank you), many ventured out to  indulge their passion for collecting be it for books, maps or printed ephemera.

Thank you to Anthony Smithson of Keel Row Bookshop, the organiser, who put in so much effort to make the day the success that it was.

Personally, I had a bit of flock…

I think this will rate as the most bizarre video I’ve watched all week, despite it only being Wednesday. It’s a compilation of wallpaper over 300 years…no don’t click the back button, stay with me!

Wallpaper provides a fascinating insight into our social history. From Chinese hand-printed wood block patterns to William Morris designs and the crazy 70’s patterns you may have grown up with on your bedroom wall, (or flock in my case), the methods and materials used in production reveal a wealth about how we regarded our homes and personal status over the centuries.

The conservation of wallpaper can be technically very challenging. Aside from scale, it must take into account the wall structure and the effects of the properties and ageing tendencies of the building materials on the paper and pigments.

PBFA fairs are always great events with stalls from THE best antiquarian and second hand booksellers in the region.

Entry is free so come along for a browse, just to say hello or to ask me a question if you are concerned about a paper item you own. Hope to see you there.

The Ephemera Society

I joined the Ephemera Society this last week. Lots of interesting events and a very informative website that I will look forward to browsing. Thank you to Anthony Smithson of Keel Row Books for alerting me to them.
